Wet

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

We had nothing scheduled for today.  There were no birthday parties, no sports events, we were free the whole day.  I had talked with Jack's dad about getting Evan and Jack together and playing some baseball, but it was only loosely scheduled.

However, when I got up, it has already begun to mist and just looked wet out.  I got the boys breakfast and printed out some 1099s that I needed to send.  Then Evan and I drove to the post office and stopped at Donut Taco Palace for the first time since November.

Rachel made pancakes for lunch for she and Noah.  Evan had matzoh with jelly on it.  I had some leftovers.

By lunch it had really started to rain so we didn't play baseball.

Later in the afternoon, the boys and I watched the fourth Harry Potter movie.  We had popcorn as well.

For dinner, we went to Pho Thai Son.  The boys ate the grilled beef and vermicelli very well.

We stopped at Randall's and picked up Redbox on the way home.

The boys are getting ready for bed now.

Until next time..

Trees Yesterday

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

Last night, Rachel and I went to bed a bit early.  At lunch, we had gone to the Natural Gardener and bought several trees to plant.  We got a pecan tree, a plum tree, a pear tree, two loquat trees and 3 blackberry shrubs.  We decided to move the Japanese Maple that we planted 10 years but hadn't grown into a spot that is more shaded.  So I dug that up and then planted the pecan tree.  Planting the pecan tree took a very long time as I had to dig deep for it.  Unfortunately, I hit a number of giant rocks that I had to dig out.  After all the digging and planting, we were pretty tired.

We walked to school this morning.  Lizzy got to see her golden retriever puppy friend.  The puppy always lays down immediately when Lizzy gets to him and exposes his belly.   He just rolls around while Lizzy smells him.  But today, as we pulled Lizzy away, the puppy nipped at Lizzy in a very playful way.  I really think he wanted to play with Lizzy.  He is really really cute.

Rachel ran out to HEB today to get some stuff for the weekend.

We walked to get Evan from school.  Noah started a weekly Mad Science program in an after-school program.  It is run at the school.  So we got him from Ms. Wenske but took him right into the school again.  Evan rode his scooter home from school.

Brody knocked on the door in the afternoon and so Evan and Noah played with him.  Christian and Connor joined them for a bit.

We had pasta and leftovers for dinner.

The boys are now getting ready for bed.

Until next time...

Friends

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

Again with the rest of the country getting hit with cold temperatures and snow, it made it to 81 degrees today.  This morning when we walked to school it was in the high 50s.  After dropping the kids off, Lizzy got to see her golden retriever puppy friend.

Rachel went for a run this morning.

I ran into Aaron's for a bit again.

In the afternoon, we walked to get Noah.  Evan went home with Wade.

Shortly after Noah came home, Brody knocked on the door and he and Noah played in the house.

Around 5:30, I went and picked up Evan.

We had leftovers from last night for dinner.

The boys are about to go to bed.

Until next time...

A Nice Day

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

Unlike much of the country, the forecast today called for a very nice day.  Highs were predicted to be in the mid-70s.  It was about 45 degrees when we walked to school this morning.  The boys took their scooters.

Lizzy got to see her golden retriever puppy friend.  The last few days we've walked a family is walking to school with a puppy.  This morning he got so excited to see Lizzy as we were coming towards them.  Lizzy was pulling to see the puppy.  The family said we should get the dogs together.

I went into Aaron's for a bit.

In the afternoon, Rachel and I drove.  Rachel needed to get going from picking the boys up to go straight to tutoring.  After we got the boys, Rachel left to go tutoring and the boys and I walked home.  Actually the boys went all the way home on their scooters while I was stuck carrying their backpacks walking home.

They did their homework.  Later in the afternoon, Brody came over and asked to play with Evan and Noah.  Eventually Sebastian also came out to play with them.  At 6:30 I finally went outside and told Evan it was dark and he needed to come in.

Rachel made pizza dough and I shaped them into 4 mini pizzas.  Everyone made their own pizza for dinner.

Noah is reading and Evan is doing his homework.

Until next time...

Trees and Football

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

This morning, when Rachel and I got up, we planted the sapling that we got for free from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  We were able to plant it in our front bed.  We hope it grows well there.  The soil is much nicer in that bed.

When we were done, Rachel ran to the school and back.  Evan went with her on his scooter.

We had lunch and then Evan and I left to go to his football game.  We stopped at the Natural Gardener on the way.  When Evan's peach tree died last year he was very upset.  We promised him that we'd get another fruit tree.  We spoke to a lady at the Natural Gardener about what tree would be best for us.   Evan had wanted a pecan tree but she said where we live, given our soil and the size of large size of a pecan tree it would not work.  She was very good and many times spoke directly to Evan since I had told her the tree was for Evan.  She explained about "chill hours" needed for fruit trees and really gave Evan the science behind things.  The recommended fig, pomegranate, plum, blackberry or kumquat trees.  She said fig trees do very well in Austin, although all of those would be good.  I think we may be leaning towards two trees - a blackberry and a kumquat.  The blackberry tree is not really a tree but more of a bush.

From there we went to the football game.  Again, Evan didn't drop a pass during warmups.  Unfortunately, that didn't carry over to the game.  Evan dropped the first pass that was thrown to him.  He also dropped a handoff on an end around.  He caught a few other passes, but another pass was intercepted that was thrown to him.  The whole team did not play well on offense or defense.  Evan was pretty dejected after the game.

We stopped at Best Buy to pick up a new Fitbit for Rachel and then Smoothie King on the way home.

It was clean up day after that but the boys did not do a very good job of cleaning up.  Evan's clean up just finished at 9pm.  I ended up going in and directing him on what to clean up and where to put it in his room.

The boys are now in bed.

Until next time...

Wildflower Center Morning

This morning we took it easy and then decided to head over to the Wildflower Center.  They were having a free event there today, Tree Talk Winter Walk, with lots of kids activities.   The boys had a great time and the weather was nice.  They got to roast marshmallows, swing in the trees, climb trees, build forts, and learn about trees.  It was a nice morning.

We came home and ate our leftovers from last night.

Morry and Evan left to go to Evan's football practice.

When they got home Morry put on the movie Paul Blart Mall Cop.  The boys really liked it.

For dinner we went to Flores.  A new one opened near us.  The boys ate well.  The food was good.

We are home now and soon the boys will get ready for bed.

Here are some pictures from the Wildflower Center.

Rain + Snow Flurries

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

It was still raining this morning when we got up.  It wasn't raining as hard as yesterday morning but it was still raining pretty hard.  So we drove to the front of the school again and walked the boys in from the front.

A bit later in the morning, Rachel went to HEB to get some things.  She said she saw snow flurries.  I later talked to two people who also saw snow flurries.

Rachel and I went to lunch at Wholy Bagel.

We drove to pick the boys up from school, but the rain had stopped by that point.  It had rained enough that Evan's football practice was cancelled.

When Evan and Noah got home, they immediately left and went over to see if Connor and Christian were home.  They were not, so they went to Brody's house and knocked on his door.  They played outside for a while and then came into our house and played Legos.  Brody had never been in our house and he seemed to really like Flash and Calvin.

We took the boys to get haircuts and then went to Genghis Grill for dinner.  Genghis Grill is a mongolian barbeque-style restaurant.  They added tablets to every table where you can place parts of your order, you can play games, and you can pay at the table.  No waiting for your bill from your server.  They had an app on there where you can take a picture of yourself and add funny hats and mustaches.  The boys took pictures of themselves.  Unfortunately, just as I was about to send Evan's picture to myself, all of the items he added to the picture were removed so it's just a picture of him.  You can see the pictures below.

Evan and Noah are in the shower now.  Noah has really bad allergies and he's trying to be in the shower to make himself feel better.

Until next time...

Rain

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

It was raining very very hard this morning.  It was raining too hard to even drive to the trail.  When that happens, we leave early before the traffic backs up in front of the school and park in front of the school and run in.  This is Evan's fourth year in elementary school.  I think this was the hardest it's rained on a morning when we had to take him to school in those four years.

We stayed home pretty much the whole day though I got my hair cut and ran to HEB and picked up movies from Redbox.

In the afternoon, it was still raining but not nearly as hard.  We parked by the trail and ran down and into the school.  Because of the rain, we had to go to each child's classroom to pick them up.

Evan started watching the Transformers movie I got at Redbox for the boys.  For some reason, Noah didn't want to watch it.

For dinner I grilled hamburgers and corn.  The boys ate left over salmon from the other night.

The boys will be going upstairs to bed soon.

Until next time...

A Visitor for Lizzy

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

It threatened to rain all day but it seemed like it would be fine to walk to school this morning.  The boys wanted to ride their scooters but we were afraid it might rain and their scooters and helmet would get wet.  Jack caught up to us and Evan and Jack walked to school together.

I worked from home all day with the exception that I had to go meet someone at Aaron's office for just a bit.

The rain continued to hold off in the afternoon, so we walked to the school.  We brought Lizzy and we carried their scooters.  Evan, Jack and Noah all rode home together.

Rachel tutored in the late afternoon.

The boys and I watched an episode of the Simpsons.  Near the end of the episode, the doorbell rang.  When I opened the door, the girl who always wants to pet Lizzy, Savannah was there, with her mom.  Savannah was selling Girl Scout Cookies, but they purposely drove to our house to sell to use so that Savannah could see Lizzy.  Lizzy was very excited to see Savannah and her mom.

Rachel had the last of the stew when she got home while the boys and I had pasta.

Evan is playing on the Playstation now.  Noah just finished reading.  They'll go to bed soon.

Until next time...

Goodbye Zayde

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

It was finally a nice morning to walk.  It's the first time in several weeks.  Everyone got up this morning.  The boys said goodbye to Zayde and we walked to school.  Actually the boys took their scooters.  The happiest living thing was Lizzy.  She was so happy to finally go with us in the morning.

We came home and Rachel went for a run.  Shortly after she got back, I drove Zayde to the airport.  It was a nice visit with him.

I stopped at Smoothie King on the way home.  I hadn't been there in two weeks.  They had noticed.  The girl working actually said something.

It got up to 82 here.  It felt really hot.  We walked to get the boys.  Again, Lizzy came with us.

At 4:30, Evan and I went to his football practice.  Evan did really well and he's basically become the main wide receiver.  I think he's enjoying it.

Meanwhile, one of the boys, Brody, across the street knocked on the door to ask Evan and Noah to come out and play.  Noah went out with them and a ton of the kids in the neighborhood were all out playing together.   Rachel said it was really nice.

Rachel and I had leftover stew for dinner and she made salmon for the boys.

The boys are now up in their room, ready for bed.

Until next time...

No School Today

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

This morning when I woke up, Evan and Zayde were both awake.  Noah came out of his room shortly after I came downstairs.  I worked while the boys and Zayde played together.

Later in the morning, Christian and Connor came over and the boys went out and played outside.  Something happened between Evan and Noah and Noah came home crying.  Zayde and Noah went upstairs and played Legos together.

Rachel made pancakes for lunch.

Rachel tutored later in the afternoon.  The boys, Zayde and I went to Barnes and Noble.  The boys had gift certificates they wanted to use.  Zayde bought them a MAD magazine and put some money on top of their gift certificates so they could get a little more.  Evan got two Calvin and Hobbes books and a Robo Spider kit.  Noah got a Snap Circuit kit.

When we came home, Noah was able to build a circuit before Christian and Connor came back over.  The boys went out and played outside until 6:30.

Rachel made beef stew and cornbread for dinner.

The boys are about to go upstairs to get ready for bed.

Until next time...

Football and Paddington

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

We had a low-key morning.  We stayed in and ate here.  Evan had two football games scheduled for today and we had to leave around 11:30.

The boys watched Inspector Gadget 2 with Zayde on Netflix.

We got to the fields and warmed up.  Rachel, Noah and Zayde got there just as the game was starting.  They were seated in time to see Evan catch a pass and run up the far a sideline for a decent-sized gain.  Evan's team played well in the first game.  I am coaching the defense.  We didn't allow a touchdown in the first half and had one interception.  Unfortunately, we gave up two interception returns for touchdown on offense and lost.

In the second game, the other team was really good.  They were running bunch formations with wide receivers and throwing deep on every play.  The defense did not play as well.  Evan had a good game though.  He caught 3 passes.  One of the passes was thrown behind him and Evan reached back and caught it with one hand and pulled it in.  Even though we lost, Evan seemed to have a good time.

Evan, Zayde and I stopped at Hey Cupcake! on the way home.

We got home and watched some football before leaving to go see Paddington at the Alamo Drafthouse way up north.  The movie was good and the boys enjoyed it.

The boys are in their rooms now.

Until next time...

Playing Baseball

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

Everyone slept in a bit this morning - even Zayde.  We didn't have anything that we were supposed to do today.

For lunch we went to Whole Foods and each got our own things.

When we got home, we decided to go to the Oak Hill Fields to play some baseball.  I called Jack's dad and they said they would meet us.  When we got to the fields they were locked so we went to an elementary school nearby that has a backstop.  It was hard to field ground balls, but I pitched to both boys before Jack and his dad got there.  Zayde was able to watch the boys play.   When Jack got there, his dad pitched to the boys.  Evan and Noah both hit well.

Afterwards we stopped and got Slurpees.

We hung out at the house for a while before going to Johnny Carino's for dinner.

The boys are now showering.

Until next time...

Family Time

This morning we drove since it was 31 degrees.

For lunch, Morry, Jack, and I went to Wholy Bagel.

Morry and I (with Lizzy) walked to pick up the boys from school.

This afternoon Evan had football practice.

When the practice was over we went over to Uncle Marvin and Aunt Sandy's house for dinner.  Jacob was there too.  We had a nice evening and dinner was really good.  Both boys ate well.

The boys are ready for bed now.

Sun

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

This morning when we got up, it seemed like more of the same.  It wasn't misting but it was still very cloudy and cold.  We drove to the path this morning.

By 10am, however, the sun came out.  One of our neighbors said today was the first sunny day in 2015.  That's actually kind of crazy when you think about it - especially for Austin.

Zayde, Rachel and I ate leftovers for lunch.

We walked to pick the boys up from school.  Lizzy was able to walk with us.  Lizzy seemed really happy.  And then she was the hit of the school.  At one point, six kids were petting her at one time.  She was really happy and the kids were really gentle.  One girl kept calling Lizzy a puppy.

Evan went home with Wade, so just Rachel, Noah, Lizzy and I walked home.

Noah and Zayde played together in the afternoon while Rachel went to tutoring.

I picked Evan up from Wade's and then grilled hamburgers.  We had baked potatoes too.  Rachel set the oven to turn on at a certain time.  There was no fire in the oven today.

Rachel is about to read with Noah, then the boys will get ready for bed.

Until next time...

Zayde

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

The cold, wet weather has just not let up.  I realize it's warmer than many other places, but it's still pretty cold here and still too cold and too wet to walk to school.  We drove and walked the trail this morning as we've been doing.

Rachel cleaned the kitchen today.

At lunch, I ran to the bank and then to Aaron's for just a bit.

We drove to get the kids.  It was misting the whole time.  You don't really get wet but everything - the ground the streets, seems very wet.

Around 4:30, the boys and I left to get to the airport to get Zayde while Rachel tutored.  The airport went smoothly.  The boys were very excited to see Zayde.

We drove straight to Rudy's where we were supposed to meet Rachel.  She came and we had a good dinner.  Evan ate really well.

We came home and Noah read to Rachel and Zayde.

The boys are in their rooms now.

Until next time...

New Fitbit

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

My Fitbit has slowly been falling apart.  Last week it actually came apart.  I asked Rachel to superglue the band back together.  Unfortunately, the glue must have run a bit and it went over the button used to check the time.  Then last night, it fell apart once and for all.  So this morning I ordered a new Fitbit.

We drove the kids to school today.  It was slightly warmer though still in the high 30's.

Later in the morning I went to one meeting, then to Best Buy to pick up the Fitbit and then to Aaron's.

Meanwhile, Rachel went for a check up with the doctor.  All of the tests last week came back negative.

In the afternoon it seemed much colder.  We drove to pick the boys up from school because Rachel needed to get home quickly to get to tutoring.

The boys and I watched a couple Simpsons episodes later in the afternoon while waiting for Rachel to get home.

For dinner, we had steak and tilapia.  The boys both ate steak.  Rachel had the tilapia.

The boys are getting ready for bed.

Until next time...

HEB and Movie Day

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

It wasn't raining when we got up but it had rained enough that Evan's football game was cancelled.  It will be rescheduled for another day some time.

In the late morning, we went to HEB.  We really hadn't done a big HEB shopping trip since our ski vacation.  It was good to fill up on things we needed.

When we came home the boys had to clean up their rooms and the game room.  I promised to put on a movie and make popcorn when they finished.

It took them a while, but they finished and I made popcorn and they had Dr. Pepper and we watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  It's the third Harry Potter.  Both boys seemed to really enjoy it.

After the movie, I made pizza.

The boys are up in their rooms about to get ready for bed.

Until next time...

Sporty Birthday Party

We relaxed this morning.  Evan slept in.  Around 10am Connor, from across the street rang the doorbell to see if the kids could play.  Evan was still sleeping so I said they'd come over once Evan got up, ate breakfast, and got dressed.  When Evan got up, he said he wanted to stay home. About an hour later I walked with Noah over to see if they could play later in the day maybe.

Noah was invited to birthday party of a kid in his class.  This kid has a brother Evan's age and the mom emailed me to invite Evan as well.

At 2:00 we all went to Soccer Zone (indoor) for the party.  Both Evan and Noah had a great time.  The kids first played flag football on a soccer field.  Then, they bounced in the bounce house and played basketball.

For dinner we ate at home.

The boys are playing now in Evan's room, but soon they will be getting ready for bed.

Cold Football Practice

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

Rachel and I were debating last night whether they boys would have school today.  They were predicting rain overnight and into this morning and temperatures around freezing.  We lucked out and it didn't rain.  We still drove the kids to the trail and walked down.

I worked from home all morning and then Rachel and I went to Wholy Bagel.  I think the cold and potential bad weather kept a lot of people away.  It wasn't very crowded.

We drove to pick up the boys.  It started to sprinkle but never amounted to much.

At 4:30, Evan had football practice.  It was about 34 or 35 degrees out and windy.  We both bundled up and went.  Evan did very well.  He seemed to enjoy it also.  I have been working with the kids on defense - how to pull flags and how to cover someone.

When we were done, we drove home and picked Rachel and Noah up and went to Chipotle.  Both kids ate very well there.

We came home and the boys are getting ready for bed.

Until next time...

Very Cold

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

This morning was very cold for Austin.  It was about 23 degrees with significant wind.  I don't know what the wind chill was.  We drove to school but walked down the trail.  Apparently the sprinklers still ran last night and there was ice everywhere on the school property.  Huge icicles hanging from the trees.  The assistant principal was outside making sure the kids didn't try to slide on the ice.  I believe the sprinklers are there to pump rain water out of a retention basin and spread the water around.  It's not intended solely to water the grass.  They may be automatic when the water level gets to a certain point, but I don't know that.

I had a lunch meeting.  Rachel had a lunch meeting to, but hers was meeting Noah at school for lunch.  She said he really liked that.

It was still hovering around freezing when school let out so again we drove.  The ice was still there and the kids coming out of school were sliding and jumping around on it until someone authority figure stopped it.

In the afternoon, Rachel tutored.

I taught Evan some basic html and he started to make a web page.

For dinner, we had hamburgers cooked on the grill.

The boys are about to jump in the shower.

Until next time...

Class Prez

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

Last night there was no blog because our internet was down.  This time it wasn't because of our router.  The entire city of Austin was down because of a cut fiber line.  The line was cut somewhere around 4:30am on Tuesday and they did not restore service until late yesterday evening.

This morning was a normal morning, other than the fact we drove to school.  The mornings have been too cold to walk this week.

I worked from home all day.

In the morning, Rachel had some of her checkup tests done.  It was close by so it was much more convenient.

In the afternoon, it was still fairly cool, but we walked to get the boys.  Evan was late coming out of school.  The teacher and the kids he comes out with came out but there was no Evan.  Finally Evan came out.  Evan told us he ran for class president (within his class not the whole 3rd grade) and he won today.  Apparently there was a primary and then a final vote and he won both.  He said he made a speech (about him being awesome and a hero) but he was quiet and only his table heard it.  So he had to stay a bit late for a meeting with the teacher to prepare for his duties.  He has to read something every morning to the class and some other duties associated with being a president.  Evan is typically very quiet in class so I'm shocked he'd want to run.

When we came home, the boys were in good moods and they played well.

Rachel left to tutor in the late afternoon.  She stopped by HEB on the way home.

For dinner, I grilled shrimp and steak.  Evan had just the steak, but Noah had the shrimp and steak.

The boys are about to get into bed now.

Until next time...

End of Winter Vacation

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

Winter vacation officially ended at 6:25am when my alarm went off this morning.  I had been enjoying sleeping in some.

It was really cold this morning.  It was about 27 degrees and the wind was blowing.  We decided not to walk.

I met some people for lunch, other than that it was a pretty normal day.

It was around 50 and sunny this afternoon so we walked to pick up the boys.  Lizzy came with us.  She seemed especially excited to walk today.  I wonder if she was looking forward to seeing all her friends.

Our new dishwasher was delivered today.  Best Buy is sending someone to install it tomorrow.

For dinner, Rachel made over-baked fried chicken.

The boys are upstairs playing.

Until next time...

Night at the Museum

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

There was no blog last night due to the unfortunate ending to the Steelers game.

I promised the boys that we could see Night at the Museum.  We had tried to go see it a couple times but because at least one of us was sick for just about every day since our ski trip, we were never in a position to see the movie.

We saw it at the AMC at the mall.  The theater hadn't even opened when we got there (though it should have).  The boys did very well before, during and after the movie.  The movie was very good.  The boys and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We came home and the boys had lunch.  Then I took Evan to flag football practice.  He had his second practice (his first was yesterday) for a new team that he's playing with.  He had a very good practice and they were using Evan at running back quite a bit.  He seemed to be getting a lot of touches.

When we got home, Noah was over at Christian and Connor's house.  The twins and Noah came back a little while later and then they all went outside together.

The boys cleaned up before dinner, then we had dinner, and they are back to cleaning.

As soon as they are done they'll have showers and get to bed for their first day back to school following winter break.

Until next time...

Bagel Shop

Hello everyone, this is Morry.

I woke up this morning and came downstairs to do some work. Evan and Noah both were awake and came downstairs with me.

For lunch, we went to Wholy Bagel.  We hadn't been there in three weeks.  The boys were excited to go with us.  Noah ate a ton of lox and capers.  The woman working couldn't believe that's what he ordered.

Rachel left from there to go tutor.

The boys and I came home.  Shortly after, the doorbell rang.  Connor was at the door asking if the boys could come over to their house to play, so Evan and Noah went over there.  In fact, Noah basically played with them until around 6pm when Rachel had to go over and get him.

At 4:15, I took Evan to go to Darius' birthday party.

After picking Evan up after the party, I stopped at China Dynasty and brought home food for us.  Noah ordered lemon chicken.  He did pretty well with it.

Now the boys are about to get ready for bed.

Until next time...

Recovering

Last night we took it easy at home since we are all recovering from whatever flu or cold hit us.  We watched movies and had a fondue dinner. The boys stayed up until midnight to watch the ball drop.

Today we took it easy at home.

Aunt Sandy and Uncle Marvin invited us over for dinner.   We had a nice time there.

The boys are getting ready for bed now.
